Unlike oil which penetrates deep, varnish stays on the surface and provides effective protection against scratches, stains and liquids. It should be noted, however, that this protective layer can limit the wood’s ability to breathe. If you are looking for deeper protection, using an oil is recommended.
Finishes with a Varnish
There are several types of finishes possible with varnishes: matte for a discreet appearance, satin for a finish between matte and gloss, or glossy for a more marked and luminous effect (it is recommended to check the finish indicated on the packaging of the chosen varnish). Depending on the desired result, different application methods are recommended:
– For a matte or satin finish, application with a brush is recommended.
– For a shiny finish, application with a roller (3 to 4 mm short pile or foam) is recommended. However, to obtain an almost mirror finish, you will need to apply 3 to 4 coats of varnish.
Application of Varnish
Be sure to wear gloves, safety glasses, and a mask while sanding and applying varnish for your safety.
For application, you can use a natural bristle or polyurethane brush, or a roller with very short bristles (4 to 6 mm) or lacquer foam, recommended for large surfaces or to obtain a glossy finish. For details, use a brush for greater precision.
It is recommended to use an anti-UV varnish if your wood is intended for outdoor use, for optimal protection against the sun’s rays.
Please consider the environment in which you are applying the polish: excessive humidity or temperature may affect the polish application and drying process.
Before application, sand your wood with the grain to remove imperfections and help the varnish adhere. Use 80 to 180 mm sandpaper, depending on the desired level of finish.
After sanding, run a slightly damp sponge over the surface to remove any raised wood fibers and dust. Let the wood dry for about an hour before continuing.
Then apply a first coat of varnish in the direction of the grain, using regular movements. For a matte or satin finish, two coats will be necessary, while for a glossy finish, allow 3 to 4 coats.
Allow the varnish to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions (usually 2 to 4 hours) before lightly sanding the surface with fine sandpaper (approximately 300mm) to improve the adhesion of subsequent coats.
Repeat the application and sanding process for each coat of varnish, making sure to remove dust between each step using a slightly damp cloth.
